How to Know if Your Refrigerator is Breaking Down

Opening a refrigerator
Any time a refrigerator begins to have problems, homeowners begin to panic just a bit because of all of the food inside that can go to waste if the situation is not fixed as soon as possible. Unfortunately, there are times when appliances just stop working out of nowhere. Other times, however, you may be able to recognize some of the potential signs that could indicate your refrigerator is breaking down, allowing you to seek a fix before things get worse.

Condenser Not Working

Check the condenser coils to see if they are dirty. This can cause some issues, making the fridge work harder and requires some cleaning. Before you clean the coils, make sure you unplug the refrigerator. If the fridge still isn’t working correctly even after cleaning the condenser coils, there could be an even bigger problem.

Broken Compressor

If you pull the fridge away from the wall and listen closely to the lower back of the fridge, you should be able to hear the compressor working. This is a humming or the sound of a motor running. If it’s on but the fridge is not cool, check the temperature. If things are still not working correctly, there may be another issue to look at.

Too Much Ice

Check your freezer. If it looks like an iceberg, there may be a problem with the refrigerator and the thermostat. Defrost the freezer and let it sit. Let the refrigerator work as normal again and if it happens again, the problem may be the fridge.
